Early, Sweet, Fresh Eater/Stores well and keeps its flavor

An English favorite from 1851. Gillet began offering it in 1876. Very large fruits are yellow with red mottling and some with russeting rays from the cavity. These apples have very firm, crisp, yellowish-white flesh with an mild acidic flavor. Great fresh or for baking, juice and hard cider. Esteemed cooking apple. Blooms late, missing most spring frosts. Ripens early October. Vigorous tree, moderate crops annually. A moderate keeper, keeps 1-3 months.

The feral, as yet unpruned, grandmother tree grows near Rock Creek outside Nevada
City, Nevada County @2500’, on a large 1800s homestead being renovated by
a young organic farmer,
about 3 miles from Gillet’s Barren Hill Nursery. Nevada City was a bustling place in the late 1800s, the Queen of the Northern Mines, with much agriculture to feed the miners. We have found many Felix trees in this community, likely due to nearly 100 years of continuous nursery operation. Felix grew many of the trees and vines still thriving in and around Nevada City.
