We are not your average nursery!

We have passionately searched to re-discover the living, historic plants still scattered across Northern California, left over from the Gold Rush. We have personally found these trees and have taken cuttings directly from the ancient, 100+ year old grandmother trees that are still alive in these ghostly orchards. We are a very small nursery and offer very rare and exclusive plants, some we may have only just found. So, there are a limited supply of some varieties. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

We are a 501(c)3 Non Profit and focus on Preserving the living legacy bequeathed to us and the biodiversity necessary for a resilient food economy in the future. We are searching for Land and Resources to grow our Nursery and look forward to offering more rare and endangered plants from our past, in the future.

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT!

Thank you Everyone for supporting this project!  While the nursery sales provide approximately 25% of our operating budget, we rely on donors and occasional grants. In the past we have received generous grants from UNFI, the Gaia Foundation, and the Bill Graham Foundation. With the pandemic there has been a drop off in grants and donations. So, we are grateful for your purchases and generous donations.
In the face of modern industrial agriculture we have lost 95% of our genetic diversity, and with your help all of us are saving the very best gems still growing throughout California’s Gold Rush Countrysides.

Product Details

Small to Medium, Flavorful, Mid Season, Beautiful

This unknown apple is round, small to medium, crisp, flavorful, sweet and slightly tart. A great eater, juicer, sauce maker. It is a uniquely beautiful yellow apple splashed and dusted with pink, orange and red. A soft russet radiates from the stem cavity. It is a reliable producer and ripens in September at 4200' elevation.

The new owners of the property bought it from a woman who grew up eating these apples in Forest City. She and her mother loved this particular apple best. Anyone in the town was allowed to pick anything in the small orchard, except this one variety because It was their personal favorite. She said it was planted in the 1920's.

Today Forest City is a Ghost town of a dozen buildings or so, built in the 1850s, it was an important mining camp and trade center. Unfortunately not a lot of details were recorded about the mining camp, but the population was estimated at over 1,000 with over 30 commercial businesses during the boom years.
