Product Details

French heirloom from the late 1700s, introduced to Western US by Gillet in 1876. Above average to very large fruit, with yellow skin, sometimes decided blush, marked with heavy russeting. Flesh is yellow, firm, moderately tender, crunchy, juicy, sub-acid. Fruit is best eaten after storage, from early winter until March or April. This culinary apple is still very popular in Europe. Very good quality fruit, one of our favorites, highly suitable for all uses.

The 125+ year young grandmother tree grows in the town of Humbug, in Malakoff Diggins State Historic Park on the San Juan Ridge of Nevada County at 3250’ elevation. Humbug is the site of one of the original hydraulic mines, and a long-term, large mining town, abundant with wonderful heirloom fruits and nuts that we will be introducing over the next few years.
