NUT TREES, POTTED PLANTS, LIMITED BAREROOT SALE -EARLY JAN

We will have some Unique Walnuts and Chestnuts for sale this year in our January Sale along with some limited bareroot trees and many potted plants!

Due to two rough spring freezes and a hail storm, our bareroot trees did not grow much this year and are severely stunted. So instead of 1500 trees to sell, we only have 170. Mostly there are only one of each variety.

Instead we will be having an on-line AUCTION beginning December 1 through December 8

All of your purchases fund our Non Profit, and your your tax-deductible donations help keep us going! Thank you for whatever way you support us!

After the Bareroot Auction we will have Potted Plants for sale and we may have some walnuts and chestnuts too!.

Normally we have about 262 varieties of 21 species that we have saved. We offer around 150 of those varieties each year.  Fortunately, we discovered that the trees that we experimentally chip budded last year, withstood the late freezes and hailstorm. So, we are changing over to that method of grafting, but it is a two-year process.

We will repost all variety information and  pictures soon, and we should be back on track with our bareroot sales starting November 1, 2023.

We are not your average nursery!

We have passionately searched to re-discover the living, historic plants still scattered across Northern California, left over from the Gold Rush. We have personally found these trees and have taken cuttings directly from the ancient, 100+ year old grandmother trees that are still alive in these ghostly orchards. We are a very small nursery and offer very rare and exclusive plants, some we may have only just found. So, there are a limited supply of some varieties. We are sorry for any inconvenience.

Plant Pickups are pre-scheduled at

THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORT!

Thank you Everyone for supporting this project!  While the nursery sales normally provide approximately 50% of our operating budget, we rely on donors and occasional grants. In the past we have received generous grants from UNFI, the Gaia Foundation, the Bill Graham Foundation and the Latrobe Fund. With the pandemic there has been a drop off in grants and donations. So, we are grateful for your purchases and generous donations.
In the face of modern industrial agriculture we have lost 95% of our genetic diversity, and with your help all of us are saving the very best gems still growing throughout California’s Gold Rush Countrysides.

If you feel our work is important, please consider a donation to help save these endangered varieties. Thank you!

Happy Planting!

Product Details

This vigorous tree produces two crops per year. The first crop is small, in late June-July. The main crop in September-October at 2500' is prolific. The fruit is violet-brown in the sun to greenish violet in the shade. The rich flesh is red, very juicy and of very good quality. This tree has survived many snows, and is a multi branched, productive wonderful fruit.

The grandmother tree is vigorously growing and producing on an 1890s homestead at 2500’ on American Hill in Nevada City, about 1 mile from Gillet’s Barren Hill Nursery. Nevada City was a bustling place in the late 1800s, the Queen of the Northern Mines, with much agriculture to feed the miners. We have found many Felix trees in this community, likely due to nearly 100 years of continuous nursery operation. Felix grew many of the trees and vines still thriving in and around Nevada City.

Please Note: We do not ship figs. Please Note: It is too expensive to ship figs individually right now, but will ship them when ordered with other barefoot trees.
